Today is May 17, 2020, and we still eat fresh vegetables from our garden of the 2019 season (carrots, beets, potatoes), drink compotes from frozen berries, chew canned mushrooms, and drink all kinds of different jams with tea.
And since the issue of nutritions and good quality food in modern history is quite acute, we decided to share with our friends and acquaintances the experience of the Smirnov family in agriculture.
Over the long years of practice, my parents, through trial and error, developed their own system for organizing the process of growing vegetables and fruits, preserving and storing them so that at the end of spring we still eat fresh vegetables. Perhaps there are more fertile techniques, but ours is optimal in the conditions of work in the garden exclusively on weekends.
So what is growing in our garden?
Let’s start with garden trees and perennials that we do not plant every season.
- apple tree (5 species),
Perennial berries (already in the beds / on the bushes):
- wild strawberry
- red currant, black currant, white currant;
- gooseberry (2 species),
- a virus (irga),
Now for the tricky one.
Vegetables, greens, flowers.
Here, perhaps, I will explain everything by month. When planting seedlings, when it is then planted in open ground. What and when it is planted immediately in open ground, and what is planted or planted in greenhouse beds.
Let’s start with the seedlings. Here we meet both flowers and vegetables.
- eggplant (seedlings);
- hot / sweet peppers (seedlings);
- petunias (seedlings).
- Tomatoes (seedlings).
The end of March – the beginning of April, the first landings are already underway. What we begin to eat at the end of April goes to the Miracle Bed. So we call a greenhouse with good thermal insulation at the top and bottom, as it has an earthen pillow with fertilizers 1 m high, and is covered with a membrane on top and is on the sunny side. In addition to this, seedlings of the house continue to be planted.
Miracle bed (without seedlings, seeds immediately into the ground):
- radish (we start eating at the end of April).
- carrots (planted in a bed with winter garlic).
Winter open ground (that was planted in the winter):
- kohlrabi (red and white),
- cauliflower (3 types),
- red cabbage.
End of April – beginning of May:
- green peas, beans (planted in a week from planting everything previous on this list).
- cucumbers (under the film, early May).
The end of May:
- whole cabbage seedlings are planted in open ground (see April),
- seedlings of eggplant, tomato, peppers (1/2) are planted in the Dirigible (portable greenhouse),
- pepper seedlings (1/2) are planted in the Miracle Bed (by this time, radish and lettuce will be eaten from here).
In this paragraph, I will stop on the flowers separately.
We have “permanent” who once planted, and then they already cope with the hardships of fate, and there are those that need to be planted every year.
- Asian poppy,
- lilies of the valley,
- decorative sunflower.
The experiment of the year 2020 will be Okra, Melotria, Lagenaria.
